Invisalign For Teens

Invisalign is a popular choice for teens because it’s clear, removable, and way less noticeable than braces. But here’s the catch: clean aligners = clear aligners, and keeping them clean is key to avoiding stains, odors, and bacteria buildup.

At Orthodontic Associates, we help teens across Lima, Ottawa, Celina, and Findlay keep their Invisalign treatment on track—and their aligners looking (and smelling) fresh. Whether your teen is just starting their treatment or needs a little cleaning motivation, this guide has everything they need to know.

Why Cleaning Invisalign Aligners Matters

Aligners sit in the mouth for 20–22 hours a day, which means they’re constantly exposed to food particles, saliva, and bacteria. Without regular cleaning, aligners can:

  • Develop a cloudy or yellow appearance
  • Start to smell (not great for close conversations)
  • Cause plaque buildup on teeth
  • Lead to bad breath or even oral health issues

Luckily, keeping them clean is simple, and we’re making it teen-approved with easy tips that fit into any routine.

1. Rinse Every Time You Remove Them

Encourage your teen to rinse their aligners with cool or lukewarm water every time they take them out—whether it’s for eating, drinking, or brushing. This quick step prevents saliva and bacteria from drying on the trays.

Never use hot water—it can warp the plastic and affect how the aligners fit.

2. Brush Gently (But Consistently)

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, unscented liquid soap to brush the aligners at least once a day. Avoid using toothpaste—it’s too abrasive and can scratch the plastic, making aligners look dull.

Teen Tip: Keep a travel toothbrush and soap in a locker, backpack, or gym bag for on-the-go cleaning.

3. Soak Aligners Daily

Soaking aligners helps remove stubborn buildup and keeps them crystal clear. Use:

  • Invisalign Cleaning Crystals
  • Denture cleaner
  • Retainer-safe cleaning tablets

Let them soak for about 15–30 minutes while brushing or getting ready in the morning.

4. Brush & Floss Before Reinserting

Putting clean aligners back into a not-so-clean mouth is like washing your socks and putting them back into dirty shoes. Brushing and flossing before reinserting aligners helps prevent trapped food particles and reduces the risk of cavities or gum issues.

5. Avoid These Invisalign No-Nos

To keep aligners clean and intact, make sure your teen avoids:

  • Drinking anything besides water while aligners are in (sugary or colored drinks can stain and trap bacteria)
  • Chewing gum or eating with aligners
  • Using colored mouthwash while wearing aligners—it can tint them

6. Replace Cases Often & Clean Them Too

Your Invisalign case should be cleaned just like your aligners. A quick rinse and weekly scrub with mild soap will do the trick. If the case starts to smell or crack, ask us for a replacement.

Teen Reminder: Always use the case! Wrapping aligners in a napkin is the #1 way they end up in the trash.

7. Make It a Habit (Not a Hassle)

Keeping Invisalign aligners clean doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Build it into existing routines—like brushing in the morning and night—and it’ll soon become second nature.

Invisalign Success Starts With Clean Habits

Your teen’s aligners are doing important work behind the scenes, but they need a little care in return. With these simple habits, your teen can keep their Invisalign trays clean, clear, and comfortable throughout treatment.
